“The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) is pleased to announce the commencement of the General Recruitment Exercise 2026, inviting qualified, disciplined, and patriotic Ugandan citizens to serve their country in both regular and professional capacities,” the statement said.

According to the military, the recruitment process will begin with online applications from June 10 to June 24, 2026, through the UPDF recruitment portal. All interested candidates must submit their applications electronically within the specified period.

Applicants must be Ugandan citizens possessing valid National Identity Cards and meet the force’s requirements on physical fitness, medical fitness, discipline and good conduct. Candidates will also be required to present recommendations from local leaders.

The UPDF said successful applicants will be shortlisted between July 1 and July 14, with names published on its official platforms and displayed on district and city notice boards across the country.

Those shortlisted will then participate in physical recruitment exercises conducted in their respective districts between July 20 and August 1.

In a bid to ensure equitable representation, the military said district recruitment quotas will be based on figures from the 2024 National Population and Housing Census.

The recruitment targets both ordinary recruits and a broad range of professionals as the force continues to modernize and expand its specialized capabilities.

For regular military service, applicants must possess either a Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) and be aged between 18 and 22 years.

The force is also seeking Information and Communication Technology specialists with qualifications ranging from diplomas to master’s degrees, as well as engineers and logistics experts holding certificates, diplomas or degrees and at least three years of relevant experience.

The recruitment drive further targets aviation professionals, including pilots, pilot instructors, aviation engineers, air traffic controllers and meteorologists.

Health professionals are among the most sought-after categories, with vacancies available for medical specialists, medical officers, pharmacists, nurses and allied health workers.

The UPDF is also recruiting advocates with at least five years of legal practice experience, graduate teachers registered to teach at primary and secondary levels, sports personnel, social scientists and psychologists.

Musicians skilled in band performance and live music production have also been invited to apply.

The military emphasized that the entire recruitment process will be conducted free of charge and warned applicants against individuals claiming to have influence over recruitment decisions.

“Recruitment is free of charge — no agents or intermediaries are involved. Report fraudsters,” the statement said.

The force also encouraged qualified women to take advantage of the available opportunities.

“Females with professional qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply,” the statement added.

The UPDF warned that applicants found presenting forged academic or professional credentials would face legal action.

“Forged or falsified documents will lead to arrest and prosecution,” the statement said.

Prospective applicants have been advised to consult official UPDF communication channels and the June 5, 2026 edition of the New Vision newspaper for detailed eligibility requirements and application guidelines.

The military said the exercise is intended to strengthen the force’s human resource capacity while offering Ugandans an opportunity to contribute to national service.

“The UPDF calls upon all eligible Ugandans to seize this opportunity to serve their nation. This exercise reflects the enduring values of Discipline, Patriotism, and Pan-Africanism,” the statement said.
