The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has officially entered into a political alliance with the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) in a strategic move aimed at securing victory in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
The landmark agreement was reached during a high-level meeting held at the NRM headquarters in Kampala, bringing together top leaders from both camps.
According to officials, the partnership is designed to consolidate support for NRM candidates, led by President Museveni across all electoral levels, from the presidency to local council positions.
NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong, Deputy Secretary General Rosemary Namayanja, and other senior party officials were among the key figures who addressed the media after the meeting.
"We are all part of the NRM family," said Todwong. "This partnership is about unity, strength, and a shared vision for Uganda’s future."
PLU is led by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Commander of the UPDF and son of President Museveni. While both entities have previously worked informally in support of common political goals, this is the first time the two have entered into a formal working relationship.
With presidential nominations just hours away, the timing of the alliance is viewed as a calculated step to enhance Museveni’s chances of winning another term.
Civil activist and PLU supporter Frank Gashumba also welcomed the alliance, noting that both sides must work together during any leadership transitions or political shifts in the country.
While NRM and PLU have often appeared as separate political streams, today's agreement confirms what many analysts have long speculated that PLU operates under the broader umbrella of the ruling NRM establishment.
As the country heads into a critical electoral period, this new political marriage is likely to shape Uganda’s political landscape significantly.
