The Leader of Opposition Betty Aol Ochan has said President Museveni called her a "bad woman" leading her to let out a hearty laugh.
Reacting to some people on social media who had criticised her for laughing with Museveni yet government was hounding members of the opposition, Ochan insisted that she is still strongly opposed to Museveni's rule.
The two met in Gulu town on Monday to discuss the Apaa land conflict and the handshake came at the insistence of Gen Moses Ali, the first deputy Prime Minister.
Ochan said the president led a community leaders discussion on the history of the contested land.
She said the Madi and Acholi select committees will continue to mediate and resolve the disagreements.
"President Museveni lightly calls me ‘Bad woman’ because I strongly oppose some of his ideas. He first called me ‘Bad woman’ in 2006 during the Juba Peace Process when we held consultations with him. This was because I stood firmly with Acholi political, religious and cultural leaders advocating for amnesty and cessation of hostilities against President Museveni and government's preference for continued military action; we ended the 21 years of conflict in Northern Uganda through dialogue to a greater extent," she wrote on her Facebook page.
She said the last time she met the president was two years ago at Layibi College in Gulu where she taught Physics and Maths from 1981-86.
"We were then breaking ground for the Atiak-Nimule Road mega project, and I addressed the women of Gulu as Area MP right before the President spoke urging them to caution him on land rights and not let him return to Kampala before making a commitment, to his bemusement," Ochan wrote.
