Diplomatic Corps Concerned Over Delayed Ruling on Age Limit Petition

Members of the diplomatic corps have expressed concern over the delay by the Constitutional Court to pronounce itself on age limit amendment petition challenging the legalities parliament used to amend article 102 (b).

During the meeting with the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga, heads of mission led by the German Ambassador to Uganda Dr Albrecht Conze with concern noted the recommended time frame for the ruling had not been respected by court.

In November last year, opposition members of parliament and a section of National Resistance Movement (NRM) rebel MPs went bare knuckle  with Special Forces Command (SFC) soldiers challenging the manner in which the constitution was being altered by lifting article 102 (b) for the age cap for the presidency a move which ended in constitutional courts of law.

Early this morning, a delegation of the diplomatic corps met the speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga and top on the agenda was the long awaited ruling of the petition challenging the manner in which article 102 (B)  was passed.

It’s over two month since the constitutional court closed the hearing of the joint petition cases challenging the constitutional amendment on the age limit.

The petitioners including Hassan Male Mabirizi, the Uganda Law Society, Gerald Karuhanga and three others faulted Parliament for breach of rules, procedures, and the constitution in passing the Act and a verdict is long overdue.

Other key issues which took centre stage included the delayed report on the Kasese killings where hundreds of royal guards attached to Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere of Rwenzururu and some people lost their lives in the attack of the palace.
