Understaffing, medicine shortages plague health centers in Kakumiro District

Health centers in Kakumiro district are grappling with a host of issues, including chronic understaffing, a lack of standby ambulances, and shortages of essential medicines.

While World Vision has contributed by constructing impressive health facilities in the area, more work is required to address the persistent challenges.

Kakindo Health Centre IV, one of the recently elevated health facilities in the district, faces congestion issues, as it caters to patients from several neighboring districts. The In-Charge of Kakindo Health Centre IV, Ayesiga Andrew, highlighted the strain on the facility.

"Due to the overwhelming number of patients from neighboring districts, we're struggling with congestion," Ayesiga explained.

Kakumiro district health officer, Senteza Robert Augustine Ateenyi, further stressed the need for improvements in the district's health infrastructure and service delivery.

Local leaders in Kakumiro have also called for increased support to health facilities, particularly those constructed by civil society organizations. The Chairperson of Kasenyi LC1 echoed this call for enhanced backing for health services in the district.

While the challenges persist, World Vision has been making efforts to empower the local community to advocate for improved health services through the Citizen Voices and Action (CVA) program. This initiative has mobilized locals in Kakumiro to push for several improvements in the health sector.

Businge Frankline, representing Igayaaza Health Centre III, lauded the CVA approach, which has empowered citizens to voice their concerns and advocate for better service delivery.

Joseph Gawera, the program's coordinator of Citizen Voices and Action in Kakumiro district, explained that their role is to educate citizens on advocating for improved service delivery. Kakumiro was identified as one of the districts facing challenges in meeting the required health standards.

While Kakumiro district grapples with the pressing issues of understaffing and medicine shortages, efforts continue to ensure that health services reach those in need, backed by the determination of the local community, civil society organizations, and health authorities.
