Parents are being encouraged to instil values in their children that will not only shape their character and future but also equip them with practical skills for sustainable livelihoods. This call comes as the Ministry of Education and Sports recently introduced a new curriculum, emphasizing holistic development. Joweria Nabuuma, Managing Director of Kiara Events, stressed the importance of this at the ongoing Baby and Kids Expo, running from Friday, May 10th to Sunday, May 12th.

The expo offers a diverse range of learning opportunities, including first aid training by the Red Cross, financial literacy, health awareness, sports activities, culinary arts, pottery, and more. Nabuuma urged parents to bring their children to the event to learn these essential skills, emphasizing the significance of instilling proper behaviour both at home and in public settings.

Raymond Mugabi, a parent attending the expo, expressed gratitude towards the organizers for providing this platform for children to expand their knowledge beyond the classroom. He encouraged the public to attend, highlighting its role in shaping the leaders of tomorrow.

Dr. Hilda Kyarisiima, a clinical doctor representing the Ministry of Health and the guest of honor at the expo, emphasized the importance of parental involvement in children's health. She advised parents to ensure their children maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, undergo deworming, and for boys, early circumcision to prevent certain diseases and maintain hygiene.

Dr. Kyarisiima also addressed the issue of maternal mortality, outlining measures implemented by the ministry to reduce these deaths among mothers and children. She identified the three main delays contributing to these fatalities: delays at home, in reaching health facilities, and in receiving prompt attention upon arrival. Additionally, she urged husbands to actively support their wives throughout pregnancy, from conception to antenatal care and delivery, to promote maternal and child health.
