Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) President Jimmy Akena has filed a legal challenge against the Electoral Commission (EC), asserting his right to contest the 2026 presidential elections after being blocked from nomination.
At a press briefing in Kampala, flanked by party officials and supporters, Akena accused EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama of undermining democracy.
He revealed that on 21 September 2025, UPC had submitted all required nomination documents in accordance with EC directives, yet the party’s presidential candidate was rejected.
“I categorically reject the decision by Justice Byabakama denying UPC a chance to present a presidential candidate. This is not just about me; it is about subverting the constitution of our party and silencing the will of our members,” Akena said.
UPC has since filed a case in court, insisting that Byabakama be served and that the party’s right to participate fully in Uganda’s multiparty democracy be upheld.
If successful, Akena’s legal challenge could see him back on the ballot, potentially altering the dynamics of the 2026 race.
Once Uganda’s ruling party under Milton Obote, UPC has struggled to regain its national influence. Akena’s move signals a renewed push to reassert the party’s relevance ahead of next year’s elections.
