Road users travelling to and from Masaka have been advised to avoid using the Busega roundabout.

Traffic at the Busega roundabout road has been halted due to floods caused by the heavy downpour on Tuesday night, which caused it to sink.

“The Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety informs the general public that the road in between Busega round about - Kyengera has partially sunk-in and the traffic police together with UNRA Engineers are assessing the damage,” said traffic police spokesperaon Micheal Kananura.

In his statement, Kananura advises all motorists approaching Busega Round about going to Masaka to use Nakawuka Road at Natete Traffic lights or Mityana road to avoid congestion untill UNRA advises otherwise

In their assesment, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) said that the erosion of the foot of the embankment at this section of the highway has caused damage to approximately 1.5 meters of the road pavement.

“This is a consequence of rising water levels in the Lubigi swamp area,” UNRA said.

Meanwhile, safety measures have been taken measures to secure the site by cordoning off the affected area.

“Our team is currently mobilizing to restore this section of the road as quickly as possible. We kindly request all road users to drive carefully and adhere to the traffic guidelines in place,” authorities said.

The prevailing El-Nino season has caused damage to the road infrustructure in the country but authorities said that resources have been secured to rehabilitate them when the season ends.

The Uganda National Metroligical Authority projections indicate that the season is expected to end in February 2024.
