NRM tribunal upholds Robinah Rwakoojo's victory

The NRM elections tribunal yesterday upheld the primary victory of Robinah Rwakoojo in Gomba West.

Rwakoojo beat five others to win Gombe West primaries. She polled 28,237 votes.

However, her main challenger Eng. Wilberforce Kaggwa who garnered 6,833 votes later contested the results.

In his petition to the NRM electoral commission, Kaggwa claimed that Rwakoojo had rigged the election. He said results had been altered at Kangogero polling station and bribed voters. Kaggwa claimed Rwakoojo bribed voters and election officials.

However when the tribunal investigated the claims, it did not find any evidence to back up Kaggwa's claims.

"The petition and evidence backing it is weak. There is no credible evidence of ferrying people between villages. Neither is there evidence of bribery," the tribunal said.

The tribunal also ruled that the issue of inflation of voter numbers is also speculative in the sense that not all persons vote for all positions in the same volumes or numbers.

The petition was consequently dismissed.
