Uganda made a winning start to this year’s edition of the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup by beating Burundi 2-1 at Lugogo on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts took the lead, only eight minutes into play when Proline FC midfielder, Bright Anukani slotted home off a Fahad Bayo headed cross to send fans at the StarTimes stadium at Lugogo into frenzy.

The 15-time champions doubled their lead, 13 minutes later through on-form striker, Fahad Bayo to ensure the games went into recess with the Cranes in the driving seat.

Only 15 minutes after recess, the visitors got a consolation after the centre referee awarded them a penalty when KCCA FC defender John Revita handled the ball in the area for Cedric Rusarenga to send Charles Lukwago the opposite side.

The wasteful hosts could have added a third but Allan Okello’s 77th minute shot only hit the post.

Speaking after the game, Cranes coach and Irishman, Johnathan McKinstry said he was happy with the result that gave his team a good start to the tournament.

“We were very much pleased with the first half and our players were implementing what we have practiced. All we wanted to do was working well in the first half. It’s wasn’t good in the second half but still, we deserved the three points,”Mckinstry said.
