Police release identities of Matugga explosion victims that killed one, injured others

Police has released the identities of the victims of the explosion that hit Mabanda trading centre, Matugga in Wakiso district on Saturday afternoon.

An unknown item exploded on Saturday afternoon, killing one person instantly, whereas eight are still nursing injuries that include broken limbs after the incident.

“It's alleged that a group of scrap metal dealers were cutting a certain piece of scrap which exploded. Our team of experts arrived at the scene, collected samples and are trying to analyse the exact cause of the explosion and also give feedback about it,” deputy Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire said.

He named the deceased as 23-year-old Abdul Yiga, a welder at Mbanda town, where the incident happened.

The police named the injured as Rogers Matovu Rogers, boda boda rider, Moreen Nimbabazi, both from Bombo, Gerald Kajubi from Matugga and one Galiwango.

Others are Rashid Mukasoma, one identified as Ssalongo, Namulibwa and Fatima Nantongo.

“They have been rushed to Mulago hospital for treatment as investigations into the incident continue,” Owoyesigyire said.

Past incidents

Last month, an 18-year-old man was killed by an explosion from a suspected grenade that had been hidden in rubbish in Rukungiri.

The incident happened at Kimanyoha cell, Nyakajema Sub County in Rukungiri district when Julius Ahereza, 18 was hit by the suspected grenade that exploded as he collected rubbish.

In February, a 15-year-old pupil was rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital after being injured in a grenade explosion.

Benjamin Ariho, a primary six pupil at Kyanamira primary school and resident of Nyakatare village in Kyanamira Sub County was hit by a grenade that he picked and opening it, it triggered an explosion that shattered his hand.

In 2009, three pupil of Kiswa Primary School in Kapchorwa were killed in a grenade blast that they were unknowingly playing within the school compound.

It was reported that the stick grenade was brought by one of the pupils to the school after mistaking it for a torch before asking his friends to examine it and how it worked but in the process, its pin was dislodged before it exploded killing the three pupils instantly.
