Rukungiri Magistrate, Police commander receive death threats over land matters

Police in Rukungiri has started investigating death threats sent to the area Chief Magistrate, District Police Commander and other officers over land-related issues.

According to the Kigezi region Police spokesperson, Elly Maate, on Monday, a police officer identified as Offen Tusingwire who was returning to his station from the office of the Resident State Attorney in Rukungiri town where he had been deployed discovered the threatening message.

“When he reached outside the gate in the road leading the State Attorney’s office, he saw a khaki envelope that on picking he felt some contents inside and on top was written on names and tittles of different people,”Maate told the Nile Post.

The area police mouthpiece said the letter had death threats directed to the Chief Magistrate, State Attorney, DPC, lawyer Bwagi Ruronga, and lawyer mark Mwesigye and on being taken to the police station and opened infront of officer in charge of the Criminal Investigation Division, on top of the letter the envelope had two items.

“The envelope had two pistol live bullets and these were exhibited and victims summoned for statements for possible clues that can lead to  the arrest of the suspects.”

In the letter found in the envelope, the mentioned people were warned to back off land cases they are following up.

“We know where you stay. We know your office. We know all your family members. We warn you to leave the land cases because we are hired to kill you if you keep in the cases,” the letter read in part.

“These bullets are yours in soon time and we are hired to kill you.”

The area police spokesperson said the matter is being investigated on a general inquiry file GEF 06/2019 which was opened.
