VIDEO: Baby survives, as mother two others perish in Jinja highway accident

A five months’ baby emerged lone survivor as its mother and on two people were pronounced dead on spot following a head-on collision between a trailer truck and a tomato laden canter truck along Kampala-Jinja road.

According to Pastor Martin Ssempa who was at the scene of the accident, it happened around Kitigoma, just after Mabira Forest, in Mehta sugarcane estate.

Specific people, he asked claimed that accident happened in wee hours of Wednesday, claiming two all people in both cars, except a five-month young baby.

“The tractor-trailer crashed into Isuzu canter loaded with tomatoes head-on. Was avoiding a sugar cane loaded truck which jumped a stop sign. Massive jam of about 15 minutes.”

The two occupants of the Isuzu canter are said to have died on the spot while the driver of the truck remained trapped in the wreckage, only to be retrieved at 11:00 am, lifeless.

“The Perennial cause of these accidents is not a mystery. Its the many trucks loaded with sugar cane which is the main source of these accidents. Often they don't have any lights or are poorly driven. The sugar barons cover up the carnage with sugar,” Ssempa opined.

Meanwhile, two people were reportedly knocked dead by a speeding bus attached to YY coaches at Television town in Soroti District.

The accidents follow a week the climaxed with several motor crashes, including one in Busembatya along Mbale-Tirinyi road between a commuter taxi and YY coach, which claimed over 10 people.

In 2017, at the same spot in Kitigoma, a truck, registration number  UAQ 804T, was coming from Jinja heading to Kampala and loaded with angle bars, rammed into the mango tree and overturned several times, killing one person and injuring others.
