Mbeki calls for lasting solution to instability in parts of Africa

The former president of South Africa Thabo Mbeki has underscored the need to define the inner needs of Africa in addition to finding the lasting solution to the challenges facing the horn of Africa.

Mbeki as a former head of state is concerned with increasing political instability, regional economic integration sabotage among others in the countries that make up the horn of Africa.

Mbeki who is leading a panel of African Union delegates on a three-day visit to Uganda to collect views on the challenges facing the horn of Africa on Tuesday first had an interaction with President Museveni at State House Entebbe before proceeding to Parliament to meet legislators.

But in his engagement with legislators sitting on the Foreign Affairs committee of Parliament, Thabo Mbeki underscored the importance finding a lasting solution to the challenges facing countries making up the horn of Africa.

Mbeki told legislators that there is an urgent need to address issues of peace, security, stability and political challenges if the horn of Africa is to receive back its pride.

The former head of State also said there is need for an economic integration of countries in the Horn of Africa.

Mbeki was commended as a patriot who together with the late Nelson Mandela dedicated their lives to fight apartheid in South Africa.

The MPs also described him as a person who worked for tolerance instead of revenge.

The committee informed the delegation that Uganda has contributed to the regional integration through promoting peace and stability in the region.

The delegation is generating views from all concerned stakeholders in horn of Africa on how to mitigate peace and security. Countries that make up the horn of Africa are Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, Eritrea among others
