Ministry of Health criticised for returning Shs 60 bn to treasury

The executive director of African Centre for Global Health Social Transformation (ACHEST), Prof Francis Omaswa has criticized the Health ministry for returning Shs 60bn of wage bill to the treasury yet there are many priorities that remain unaddressed.

Omaswa made the remarks in Kampala during a three day special consultation on governance for health in Africa organized under the theme: “Governance for health and health workers for all”.

He called on the government to educate more people very well and engage in bilateral agreements with many countries such that young people can go in coordinated way to work abroad and come back.

Prof.Khama Odera Rogo, who delivered the key note address on historical perspective on health in Africa, expressed dismay on how different African countries have continued training more health professionals than they can employ, a case in point being Uganda

The leaders in the health sector also challenged African governments to consider alignment of health issues with their needs if the continent and specific countries are to ensure quality health services for their natives.

The Vice President Edward Ssekandi, who officiated the closure of the three day conference informed health leaders that the government is in the process of enacting a health insurance scheme for all people of Uganda without discrimination.

Ssekandi revealed the development of the Health system in the country is expanding and at the same time being transformed to meet the needs of people.
