Commuter taxi drives through Namugongo bound pilgrims, crashes four

A commuter taxi registration number UBD 860W yesterday drove through a group of Namugongo- bound trekking Kenyan pilgrims along Iganga- Jinja highway, crashing four and injuring several.

The incident happened around Bugodi village, Milingirire parish in Baitambogwe Sub County.

The pilgrims were trekking following a stay rest at Iganga Parish when the driver of the commuter taxi lost control of it, skidding off the road and driving through the pilgrims.

Among the deceased include; Joselyn Wanjala, Sarah Ajiambo, Pelvic Malinde and Goefrey Agaga. Meanwhile the injured were rushed to Iganga hospital for medical attention.

Beatrice Apiny, the OC of the area attributed the accident to recklessness and over speeding from the driver, who is now on the run.

“These people are moving day and night, drivers should reduce speed when they see them ahead,” she said.

The pilgrims who started their journey from Bungoma in Kenya maintained their determination to reach Namugongo despite the tragedy that befell their colleagues.
