Boat cruise accident survivors revisit scene of tragedy

RICHARD OLWENYI

Survivors of the boat accident last year want government to enforce regulations on water transport to reduce fatalities.

Led by Buganda kingdom's Prince David Kintu Wasajja , the survivors said during a thanksgiving ceremony at Mutima Beach over the weekend that periodic inspection should be heightened.

Mutima beach in Mpata village Mukono, was thrust into the global limelight after a boat accident claimed lives of more than 30 people in November last year.

The incident shook the nation and led to calls for stronger regulation and supervision of water vessels.

Over the weekend, the survivors met to pray for the souls of their loved ones who perished in the accident.

Fr. Pius Dunga of Mubanda parish Lugazi led the prayers.

He applauded the survivors for turning to God after the tragedy. To the local community, the accident was a turning point. One local leader said a number of roads have been worked upon.

"No one cared about us before," the leader said.
