Uganda’s Denis Onyango is world’s best African goalkeeper

Uganda Cranes goalkeeper and Captain Denis Onyango was on Tuesday evening named the best African goalkeeper in the entire world by the continent’s football governing body, CAF.

At the function held in Dakar, Senegal that saw Egypt and Liverpool fowar Mohammed Salah voted the African footballer of the year, Uganda and Mamelodi Sundowns’ Onyango was named the best shot stopper on the continent and automatically qualified him to the best eleven in Africa to rub shoulders with other African stars mostly plying their trade in Europe.

He later took to his twitter account to post, “IF U BELIEVE IT, U CAN DO IT” in a show of happiness over the honor.

His club, Mamelodi Sundowns also took to social media to congratulate him.

“Denis Onyango, officially, Africa’s finest shot stopper. History made. Legacy cemented. Let’s congratulate Denis Masandawana on being the only African based Player in the Africa Best XI,”the South African club posted.

Onyango later posed with his award for photos with FIFA president Infanito, Magogo, Desabre, Salah and Sadio Mane.

The entrants to the best eleven team on the continent were chosen CAF media experts, coaches of the clubs that reached the quarter finals of the CAF champions League and CAF Confederation Cup, legends and coaches plus captains of the CAF member countries.

FUFA President, Moses Magogo , Cranes coach, Sebastine Desabre and FUFE CEO Edgar Watson attended the function where Uganda’s Onyango was hailed for his outstanding performance in 2018.

Onyango, who plies his trade in the South African Premier Soccer League  guided Ugandan to a back to back return to the Afcon  finals to be played next year without conceding a goal in five qualifier games that Uganda has so far played.
