Makerere University research fellow Dr. Stella Nyanzi suffered a miscarriage while in Luzira prison.
A frail looking Nyanzi made the revelation in court today where she had gone to defend herself in a case in which she sued Makerere University for failing to pay her salary arrears.
The case has now been pushed to February 13.
Nyanzi also another case related to insulting the president which is the reason why she was incarcerated. Hearing of this case is scheduled for tomorrow.
Nyanzi told court that she had suffered a miscarriage while in prison. She did not provide further detials. Some reports from people who had visited the activist had noted that she was in poor health condition.
During today’s court proceeding, both Nyanzi’s lawyers and Makerere University informed court that they were not ready for the hearing for lack of the relevant documents.
The two parties then asked court for an adjournment to another date prompting the judge to set the 13th of February.
Justice Mugambe advised Makerere University to resolve their issues to clear the image of the university. Dr Nyanzi has been on remand at Luzira prison since November last year on charges of cyber harassment and offensive communication.
In October last year, Makerere University’s appeal tribunal directed that Dr Nyanzi be re-instated and be paid all her salary arrears. The move would also have seen her promoted to the level of a research fellow with immediate effect after lifting her suspension. Having failed to abide by these orders, Nyanzi sued the university.
However, in a strange twist of events, the university has since dismissed her, arguing that her contract expired, and she was unable to renew it.
