Nambooze: "I am back, better and with vigour"

More than a year out of parliament after being roughed up in a scuffle over the removal the presidential age-limit, Mukono Municipality legislator, Betty Nambooze, finally hopes to return to the House which resumes on January 9 after the Christmas break.

Nambooze told The Nile Post that her long absence has not dampened her resolve to fight for what she believes is right.

She said the fact that the Constitution was amended by force which makes the entire process a nullity.

“The age limit bill passing was the epitome of the 10th parliament. Nothing more will be counted on them. All that is being done now is ceremonial” Nambooze said.

She was optimistic that when there is a change of government, some of the amendments passed by the current Parliament will be undone.

She said her voters were proud to have been a part of a struggle to “protect” the sanctity of the Constitution.

However although its been a full year out of parliament, Nambooze said she missed nothing because history will and has already judged the parliament.

Priorities

Nambooze returns to a political scene whose landscape appears to be changing by the day.

During the time she was away, the political popularity of Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine soared leading the Kyadondo East MP to clash with the police over his concerts.

Weighing in, Nambooze said parliamentarians shouldn’t handle the issue selectively to the benefit of  Kyagulanyi but encompass all artistes, saying the music and arts industry employs a number of young people who earn a living from it.

She said some of the conditions put in place for music promoters to organise concerts are unrealistic and are aimed at failing artistes.

Nambooze said she hopes to retable the Alcohol Bill earlier introduced in 2016 that was taken up by the ministry of Health.

She said the ministry has swept her bill under the carpet yet many youth are wasting away.

She said she will raise the matter of the acting executive director of Kampala Andrew Kitaka whom she said was appointed irregularly by the minister of Kampala Beti Kamya.

Nambooze contends that Kitaka should have gone through the right procedures.
