Residents of Masaka are reeling after one of their own, a 63-year-old Mmeere Nansubuga, was gang raped and hacked to death.
The incident occurred in Kyanakase village, Kabonera sub-county in Masaka district. Nansubuga’s body was discovered on Wednesday, December 26, 2018.
Neighbours believe Nansubuga Mmeere was killed late in the night as she had been sighted that evening alive. Her body was discovered in the morning by members of her local group who were returning cooking utensils to be stored at her home.
They observed that Nansubuga, a peer educator at Kitovu Mobile, was first raped before she was hacked with a machete. Her body was then dragged into a banana plantation in an attempt to conceal her murder .
Earlier this month, Police and the army in Masaka conducted several operations in which dozens of suspected criminals were arrested ahead of the festive season.
Residents believe the assailants who killed Nansubuga struck several homes though no one else was killed.
Angry residents stopped the Police from taking Nansubuga’s body to the mortuary accusing officers of failing to deploy police dogs to track the assailants.
The deputy RPC Masaka subregion Muhammad Nsubuga called for vigilance in the fight against insecurity.
Last December, assailants killed 5 residents of Masaka forcing the institution of special security operations to net suspects.
