Police hunt for boyfriend to student found tied on bed, burnt in her room

Police have mounted a hunt for Solomon Okello, a boyfriend to Immaculate Birungi a student who was found dead and her rented room along Neptune Avenue plot 21 Mbuya and set ablaze by unknown persons.

On Thursday morning, the body of Birungi, a post graduate student at the Management, Training and Advisory Centre (MTAC) in Nakawa, Kampala was found in her room that was partly set ablaze in what investigators have termed as a cover up.

According to Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, the first suspect is Okello who is on the run.

“She was found dead tied on her bed and her body burnt. Our primary suspect is the boyfriend who is currently on the run,”Owoyesigyire said.

He told this website that the scanty information investigators have gathered indicates that the two lovers were seen together near the house the evening before the incident.

According to police, the lifeless body was found covered with beddings as her hands and legs were tied with ropes on the bed.

One of the  deceased’s sister who preferred anonymity said  Birungi's life could have been ended by her estranged boyfriend, who has been complaining about her behavior of bringing friends to her room.

Other witnesses interviewed claimed that the deceased had refused to move in with her boyfriend who has been paying her tuition, a move that prompted action from him

The Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson said two other people are in custody at Jinja road police station to help in investigations.
