Kiwanda: Uganda to attract 4 million tourists annually by 2020

The Minister of State for Tourism Godfrey Kiwanda Ssubi on Tuesday said Uganda is set to attract 4 million tourists annually come 2020.

Kiwanda made the remarks, while launching Tulambule domestic tourism campaign at Uganda Museum, in Kampala.

He said the massive attraction of tourists to Uganda is attributed to the role played by Government in partnership with the private sector to market Uganda’s tourism potential worldwide.

“Tourist Agencies, Hoteliers and Government have aggressively marketed tourism domestically, regionally and at international levels”, he said.

He enumerated the measures to promote tourism in Uganda to include; Tulambule domestic tourism, which encourages Ugandans to visit tourists attractions in the entire country.

“Other tourism products we sell include; Twende Uganda, where we encourage tourists from the East African Region to visit Uganda, Destination Uganda, to attract tourists from the entire African Continent and Pearl of Africa campaign for the entire world”, he added.

He further said the Tourism Ministry is in the process of mentoring Ambassadors comprising of both national and foreign music celebrities; to promote tourist attractions, such as National Parks and Cultural sites among others.

Uganda Tourism Board deputy Chief executive John Ssempebwa said hiring of foreign Public Relations firms, to promote Uganda’s tourism has contributed a lot in attracting tourists from Europe, the US and Scandinavian countries.

He said Uganda airlines is expected to hit the sky come April next year, where number of tourists is expected to increase.

“This is the time for the whole tourism fraternity to partner with us to promote the industry”, he said.

Susan Muhwezi, the chairperson of the Uganda Hotel Owners Association (UHOA), said their members' previous study tour to the US has improved hotel services in the country.

“Yes, our members leant a lot from the US, where improved services in major hotels around the country are clearly visible”, she said.
