Army court remands seven for robbing Masaka hardware store, killing security guard

The General Court Martial in Makindye has charged and remanded seven people including a retired UPDF soldier for attacking Muto Hardware in Masaka town, killing two people and robbed huge sums of money.

On June 1 at Muto Hardware along Buddu street in the heart of Masaka town at around 8pm, unknown assailants stormed the place killing Moses Musinguzi,the security guard and another employee before robbing Shs 435 million.

On Tuesday, seven people including Rtd Cpl Paul Kiwanuka,54,Derrick Jumba,40,John Bosco Waliggo,43,Kizza Bukenya Matiya,Stephen Kayemba,Julius Tweheyo,30 and Gerevazio Kankaka 25 were charged with two counts of murder and two for aggravated robbery.

They however denied the charges.

The suspects leave the army court dock on Tuesday.

The state led by Maj. Raphael Mugisha told court that investigations into the case are still ongoing before asking for an adjournment for mention of the case.

The General Court Martial chairman,Lt.Gen.Andrew Gutti adjourned the case to September 25 before  remanding the suspects to Luzira government prison.

The group according to the state are people subject to military law according to section 119 of the UPDF Act 2005.

Section 119 (h) states that any person found in possession of arms, ammunition or equipment ordinarily being the monopoly of the defence forces or other classified stores as prescribed by the law is subject to military law.

On the fateful day, occupants of the hardware shop who were watching the World Cup football match between Spain and Russia scampered for cover and safety after multiple gunshots rang out after gun-wielding men stormed the hardware.

According to employees,the attackers went to the cashier and the hardware proprietor, Moses Kalisa whom they demanded that they hand over cash to them after pointing a gun at them.

It is also said that after robbing the money, the attackers dashed out of the hardware before jumping onto waiting motorcycles to an unknown destination.
