Education

The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has for the second time halted the opening of Soroti university for failure to meet the minimum requirements.

The  university was supposed to open officially this month (August) but NCHE said it still has a long way before its opening can be sanctioned.

Prof Opuda Asibo, the executive director made the revelation while touring the university with the state minister for Higher Education Dr John Muyingo .

"It does not have adequate staff, we have not yet approved some courses and some university structures need to be improved," he said.

Soroti university is Uganda's 9th public university and was approved by the Parliament of Uganda and gazetted on 16th July 2015 under statutory instrument 2015 No. 34.

The interim vice chancellor Prof Robert Ikoja said they have done their best to solve some of the challenges but have been undone by lack of resources.

He said their request foe Shs 5.3 billion but to address all the existing challenges has not been answered.
