Penalties save Villa, Vipers as battle for league summit rages on

Both Kitende based Vipers SC and record league champions SC Villa won their respective games by a goal’s margin in the Azam Uganda Premier League on Wednesday at various stadia.

In Masaka,at the Recreation grounds, a Martin Kiiza penalty in the 43rd minute following a hand ball by a Masavu defender was enough for the record champions to bag all the three points and maintain their top position in the league.

At Namboole, an Erisa Ssekisambu penalty on the 40th minute mark following a foul on Milton Karisa in the area by Allan Munaaba was enough for the venoms to keep the league summit in sight when they beat tax collectors Uganda Revenue Authority.

In Bombo, West Nile side Onduparaka who had just suspended their head coach played to a goalless draw with UPDF as both teams fired blanks in another encounter in the Azam Uganda Premier League on Wednesday evening.

At the Prisons stadium in Luzira, Musa Esenu scored twice to help Kirinya Jinja SS beat home side Maroons and break their unbeaten run of 16 games.

The home side had earlier scored through Allan Anguyo on the 50th minute mark.

Wednesday’s results leave SC Villa still seated at the top of the Ugandan league on 43 points from 21 games whereas Viper are second on 39 points, with a game at hand.

Defending champions KCCA FC are still third on 36 points from 18 games whereas Entebbe based Masavu side are languishing at the bottom of the league on 19 points.

On the top scorers log, Vipers’ Dan ‘Mzee’ Sserunkuuma is at the top with 10 goals whereas Bright Stars’ Nelson Ssenkatuuka is closely following on nine goals.
