Shun corruption, Archbishop Ntagali urges families

The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda His Grace Stanley Ntagali has urged families to shun corruption saying the vice that is steadily destroying the nation, is rooted within 'our homes.'

Archbishop Ntagali said that spouses are increasingly becoming deceitful and building self-centred families, a trend which fuels corruption when such people occupy public offices.

He made the plea during the New Year's Day service at St Paul's Cathedral Namirembe this morning.

According to the latest Corruption Perception Index-CPI by Transparency International, Uganda ranks 151 out of 176 countries, a drop of 12 places from the previous ranking.

But the general public believes that the vice is fuelled by the laxity in investigation or prosecution of high-level officials involved in corruption.

In the recent past, a number of political leaders have been named in corruption scandals, further exposing the algae among Uganda's political elite.

However, the Archbishop said that other than lamenting on the absence of political will to end corruption, every Ugandan should be an agent of God's love and transformation and an anti-corruption ambassador. The Archbishop further appealed to the youth to avoid excessive use of drugs.

According to the Uganda Youth Development Link Statistics, 45% of Uganda's population are involved in excessive use of drugs such as marijuana and alcohol over consumption.
