Police yet to act on remanded officers

Police is yet to suspend the six officers who were remanded by the General Court Martial last week over their role in the alleged kidnap and extradition of foreign nationals, URN can exclusively reveal.

The officers include: Joel Aguma, the Commandant of the Police Professional Standards Unit-PSU, Nixon Agasirwe, the former head of the Special Operations Unit, James Magada and Benon Twebembeire, both Intelligence officers and Faisal Katende and Abel Tumukunde from the Flying Squad.

Police spokesperson, Asan Kasingye, said until the officers are suspended, they are still deployed in their respective offices.

"I am sure the directorate of Human Resource Administration is handling the matter.  It is still too early to ask about their offices but they have not yet been suspended," Kasingye told The Nile Post.

While the administrative work of the affected officers is being handled by their deputies, the investigative and intelligence files they were handling have barely been touched since they were arrested about two weeks ago.

For example Aguma was independently handling investigations in the police human resource administration and the Logistics and Engineering directorate as directed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Gen Kale Kayihura, two months ago.

A source within PSU who preferred anonymity revealed that, "these files have barely been moved from the commandant's desk since his arrest."

The public service standing orders mandate the head of the institution or department to interdict a public officer who is facing criminal prosecution pending determination of his/her innocence.

The officer loses the position once six months elapse before the matter is resolved.
