Age limit is not a priority-MUASA

Dr Kiggundu

The Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) has broken the silence over the contentious age limit debate.

Dr Muhammed Kiggundu, the MUASA chairperson, told journalists today that there are many pertinent issues that need to be addressed other than the age limit.

“Lifting the age limit is not what the country needs to have now,”Dr Kiggundu said.
“There are many other pertinent issues and not changing of the Constitution. ”

Igara West MP Raphael Magyezi recently tabled a private members bill on the floor of parliament which has since been referred to the parliamentary Legal Affairs committee.

Jinja Municipality West legislator Moses Balyeku who was among those who seconded the motion said age should not be a factor that hinders the rights and freedom of any Ugandan.

However, according to the MUASA chairperson, it would be good to see President Museveni retire to his country home advising the youthful leaders on what to do.

“We should see old leaders sit home and advise young people.”

Kiggundu however said that both the supporters and opposers of the bill sides should be left to convince the public about their views.

Article 102 (b) of the Constitution emphasises 35 and 75 years as the lower and upper age limits respectively for a presidential candidate.
