MAO: Tough love from government is good, why should you be given relief money when you sleep up to midday?

Opposition Democratic Party (DP) President General Norbert Mao has commended the government for the COVID-19 relief fund to the vulnerable poor who have been affected by the pandemic and the lockdown.

However, the two-time presidential contender, while replying to comments made by the Minister of State for Finance, Planning and Economic Development,  Henry Musasizi, said the government was right to install some measures before releasing the said money.

Musasizi revealed that those who had not been working prior to the pandemic were eliminated from the beneficiary list and would only get the fund by “mistake”.

According to Mao, this tough love from the government is commendable as it could be a wake-up call to the “unworthy”.

“There are worthy poor and the unworthy poor. That tough love is also good from the government. If you sleep up to midday, you are unworthy poor,” he said.

Mao called for the apprehending of the officials who misappropriated food rations meant for distribution to the vulnerable poor in the previous lockdown.

“We are very angry that the food was stolen, that is why we are going to cash. Those who are responsible for the mass murders should be held accountable. It is disgusting what we witnessed, “he said.

“What we are discussing now is poor leadership. The teams are in disarray. It is a failure of leadership. At least, let us give mabugo to the health workers by paying their allowance arrears, “he said.
