Police marine officer dies on rescue mission following heavy rains

A Police marine officer has drowned while trying to save another man after a heavy downpour that led to floods in various parts of the city.

According to Kampala Metropolitan deputy Police spokesperson, Sgt Godfrey Mwondah attached to marine police was trying to save another person and was washed away by floods.

“No. 4767 SGT Godfrey Mwondah, attached to police Marine was on duty to rescue a one Ssekitoleko of Biwologoma in Kiira division who had been washed away by floods was also washed away by the floods,”Owoyesigyire said.

The police mouthpiece said the police officer who was on the rescue mission was found in Mbuya Katoogo swamp often used as a washing bay and was unconscious.

“Our officer was found in Mbuya Katoogo swamp used as a washing bay alive and taken to Kiswa health center in   Bugolobi where he died from.”

More deaths

The Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson said that another person, Jowelia Tumusiime, 50, an employee of Nippon cleaning services was taken by fast running water in Zzana Lufuka zone along Entebbe road.

Following the heavy rains that caused floods, Owoyesigyire said another woman and her 24-year-old daughter were electrocuted to death in Ssembule zone, Lubaga division.

“It is alleged that while Agnes Naiga, 44 was hanging clothes during the early morning downpour, her hanging lines were in touch with live wires transmitting electricity and she was electrocuted. Meanwhile, her daughter Lillian Nakagogwe, 24 tried to save her and she too was electrocuted,”Owoyesigyire said.

He said both bodies were picked and taken to the city mortuary for postmortem as investigations into the circumstances are ongoing.
