DPP drops charges against Minister Nantaba, 3 Police officers over Sssebulime’s murder

Featured

The Director of Public Prosecution has dropped charges against the State Minister for ICT, Idah Nantaba and three other police officers over the murder of Ronald Ssebulime.

Police in March this year responded to an alert by Nantaba over a suspected assassin who was allegedly following her with an aim of shooting her dead.

In the resulting fracas, Ssebulime was shot dead by Police in Naggalama but it was later found out that he was innocent as he was looking for directions to his children’s school.

Police arrested four police officers whereas the law enforcement body started investigating Nantaba over the murder.

However, in a withdrawal form dated September 9, to the Chief Magistrates Court in Mukono the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mike Chibita has dropped charges against Nantaba, Police Constables Ronald Opira, Ronald Baganza and Edward Cherotich.

“This is to inform court that the Director of Public Prosecutions has decided to discontinue proceedings against the group who were charged with murder,”Chibita wrote.

Following the incident, Police admitted that Ssebulime was wrongfully killed by their officers on a patrol truck after suspecting him of having attempted to assassinate the minister.

“After a few warning shots in the air, the suspect stopped and surrendered to the police, who arrested and led him to the police vehicle. It is true that the deceased was removed from the police pickup and instantly shot dead by our officer,” Enanga said in March adding that police officers on patrol truck had been arrested.

Meanwhile, police started investigating Nantaba for hoodwinking them that someone wanted to kill her.

The latest development comes on the heels of a police officer, one David Ssali who was in April this year charged with the murder of the Ronald Ssebulime by the Mukono Chief Magistrates court.

The police officer who is currently on remand is however not among those whose charges have been dropped by the DPP.

Family weighs in

Following the latest development, Ssebulime’s family through their lawyer, Muwada Nkunyingi has said they are saddened by the action of the DPP for letting Minister Nantaba off the hook.

“As we explore alternative legal and judicial remedies, the family jointly with the complainant will express their take on the matter,”Nkunyingi of Muwada and Company Advocates said in a statement.
