10 dead in Buikwe accident as lorry rams into dancers

A driver is on the run after a vehicle he was driving lost control and rammed into a group of Kadodi dancers killing eight people on the spot in Kikubamutwe in Wakisi sub-county, Buikwe district. Two other people died on their way to hospital.
The accident occurred at on Wednesday night.
The Tata truck registration number is UAK 277N.
Eye witnesses narrate that the driver of the lorry which was transporting sugar cane appeared to lose control before driving into the group. The dancers were part of a procession preparing for the circumcision rite of male youths in the area.
The procession was along Njeru Kayunga road.
Ssezibwa region police spokesperson Cadet ASP Hellen Butoto confirmed the accident and death toll.
All day, shocked residents have been moving door to door to commiserate with families who lost loved ones in the accident. Relatives are camped at Jinja hospital awaiting release of the bodies of the deceased for burial.
On the same day in Kapchorwa, 21 people lost their lives after a bus they were travelling in from Sipi Falls overturned. This brings the death toll in accidents to 31 in a single day in Uganda, one of the worst in recent recorded history.
