For some, Christmas extended to the next day

In the heart of Soweto, located in Namuwongo, a Kampala suburb, several members of the community had carried their Christmas celebrations into Boxing Day.

In fact some did not even know that it was another day since they thought it was just one long day.

By 9am on Boxing Day, people living in the suburbs of Namuwongo, Soweto village hadn’t left their favourite drinking joints.

By the time we reached this place, people were still drinking as others were dancing to the music, playing from the make-shift bars.

Women serving the Malwa, a local potent gin, in this joint could barely rest because of the constant demand for more hot water to refill the pots.

Smiles filled their faces even when it was clear that they were smiling at nobody but rather everything that passed by.

When we asked them whether they understand the significance of Boxing Day, one of them said: "It is a day of people boxing those annoying them but we shouldn’t go into such situations."
