KINSHASA – Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, on Saturday held high-level talks with President Félix Tshisekedi at the State House in Kinshasa, underlining a renewed commitment to cooperation between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo in matters of security and regional peace.
The closed-door meeting, described as cordial and strategic, centered on bolstering joint defense efforts and expanding bilateral collaboration.
The talks come amid continuing operations between the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and Congolese troops against armed rebel groups in eastern DRC.
President Tshisekedi applauded Uganda’s role in the ongoing joint military missions, hailing the UPDF’s professionalism and discipline in combating insecurity along the shared border.
“We recognize Uganda’s unwavering support in combating insecurity along our shared borders. Their professionalism and discipline have greatly contributed to the success of our joint missions,” he said.
General Kainerugaba reiterated Uganda’s resolve to stand with the DRC in the face of persistent regional threats.
“Our shared security is non-negotiable. Uganda values this partnership and remains fully committed to working alongside the Congolese government to ensure lasting peace for our peoples,” he said.
The two leaders also explored broader frameworks for cooperation in intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism, and cross-border infrastructure.
Both sides emphasized the need for enhanced trust and coordination in tackling transnational threats and promoting long-term development in the Great Lakes region.
Saturday’s meeting adds momentum to Kampala and Kinshasa’s deepening diplomatic and military collaboration, which is increasingly seen as vital to stabilizing one of Africa’s most volatile regions.
