The Judiciary has extended its video conferencing facilities to Mukono High Court, a move aimed at enhancing access to justice, cutting transportation costs, and reducing case backlogs.
The launch was presided over by the acting Principal Judge, Lady Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga.
Before the official launch, Mukono High Court held its maiden video conferencing court session between Kauga Main Prison and the court.
The session was presided over by the Resident Judge of the Mukono Circuit, Lady Justice Jacqueline Mwondha.
Justice Mwondha commended the Judiciary for installing the facility.
“This is a significant stride in modernizing the justice delivery system at Mukono Circuit," she said.
She further noted the importance of the technology in protecting vulnerable witnesses.
“The video conferencing facility will provide a secure avenue for the vulnerable to testify against suspects.”
Annet Mpabulungi, a representative from UNDP, highlighted the efficiency and security benefits of the new system:
“The video conferencing system will enable remote participation in court hearings, allowing detainees to attend proceedings without being physically transported to court. This not only reduces logistical challenges but also enhances security and efficiency in the judicial process.”
Acting Principal Judge Lady Justice Okuo Kajuga urged judicial officers to adhere to ethical standards and human rights while utilizing the technology:
“As we implement these innovations, let us remain committed to upholding human rights, ethics, and the right to a fair trial. Accuracy and accountability must guide our actions.”
She also expressed appreciation for the support received:
“We thank the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for supporting the implementation of this technology and look forward to continued collaboration in the administration of justice.”
Mukono High Court now joins other circuits including Masaka, Mubende, Mbale, and Gulu that have adopted video conferencing technology in court operations.
This initiative is part of the Judiciary’s broader Information and Communication Technology (ICT) strategy and is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
