Without robust data protection measures, the misuse of private conversations, financial records, and biometric details poses a serious threat to both individual security and national economic stability, Uganda’s ICT and National Guidance Minister, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, has warned.
Speaking at the Data Protection and Privacy CEO Forum in Kampala, Dr. Baryomunsi called on leaders to go beyond mere legal compliance and embrace data stewardship as a pillar of trust, innovation, and sustainable development.
“As the technology and digital sectors rapidly evolve, so do the risks. If personal data falls into the wrong hands, the consequences can be severe — not just for individuals but for national security and economic systems,” he said.
Dr. Baryomunsi emphasized that digital footprints, including private conversations and financial information, are increasingly vulnerable to exploitation if adequate safeguards are not put in place.
Echoing his sentiments, the Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Nyombi Tembo, underscored that the right to privacy and protection of personal data are fundamental human rights that must be upheld in the digital age.
The forum brought together CEOs and data governance experts to explore practical solutions aimed at strengthening data protection systems and preventing scenarios where personal data is compromised.
