Over 40 arrested in police swoop in Bunamwaya

In the early hours of Thursday, police conducted an intelligence-led operation in Ngobe-Bunamwaya and Ngobe Mayinja, targeting areas notorious for criminal activity.

The operation, which commenced around 12:50 a.m., was aimed at dismantling hotspots known for harboring criminals who have long terrorized residents.

Authorities identified "block spots" in the area as planning centers for various criminal activities.

These locations had been under surveillance for some time, with law enforcement closely monitoring the movement of individuals suspected of involvement in organized crime.

The decision to strike at night was strategic, aimed at maximizing the element of surprise and ensuring the safety of both residents and officers.

During the operation, 40 suspects were apprehended, including 11 females and 29 males.

They are currently being held at Bwebajja and Kajjansi police stations, pending further screening and interrogation.

While specific charges have not yet been disclosed, the suspects are expected to face serious allegations related to organized crime, including theft and burglary.

Superintendent of Police Onyango, the Public Relations Officer for the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP), confirmed the arrests and emphasized the operation's importance in restoring peace and security to Ngobe, which has seen a rise in crime in recent months.

"The successful execution of this operation is a testament to the dedication and professionalism of our law enforcement officers," said SSP Onyango.

"We have been working tirelessly to gather intelligence and build a strong case against these individuals. Our goal is to ensure that the people of Ngobe can live without fear of being targeted by criminals."

Many Ngobe residents expressed relief, having lived in fear of the criminal elements in their community.

"We have been living in fear for too long," said one resident who wished to remain anonymous. "It's about time the police stepped in to help us. I hope this operation marks the beginning of a safer Ngobe."

However, some community members have raised concerns about the potential for innocent individuals to be caught in the police sweep.

They urged authorities to ensure fair screening and prompt release of those found innocent.

"We understand the need for security, but we also want to make sure that the police are thorough in their investigations," said another resident.

In response, SSP Onyango assured the public that the screening process would be conducted meticulously, with each suspect's involvement in criminal activities thoroughly assessed before any legal action is taken.

He also encouraged community members to provide information that could assist the investigations, noting that cooperation between the police and the public is crucial in the fight against crime.

The police have pledged to maintain a heightened presence in Ngobe and surrounding areas as part of a broader strategy to dismantle criminal networks and restore order in the region.

Additional operations are expected in the coming days, with authorities hopeful that these efforts will lead to a significant reduction in crime and a safer environment for all residents.
