Katikkiro Mayiga calls for action in Kiteezi

Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga has called for political considerations to be set aside, urging those responsible to focus on finding solutions to the garbage problem in order to prevent a recurrence of the disaster in Kiteezi.
The Katikkiro visited a camp where over a hundred people affected by the landslide are currently taking refuge.
Three weeks have passed since the landslide in Kiteezi claimed lives and destroyed property.
During his visit, Mayiga inspected the tents where the displaced individuals are now living.
In his address, the Katikkiro shared that the Kabaka was deeply saddened upon hearing the tragic news from Kiteezi, as many of his people lost their lives, and others lost their belongings.
Mayiga emphasized that the issue of garbage management should be kept free of political interference and that a long-term solution is essential.
"I am of the view that politics be set aside and we focus on a long-lasting solution," he stated.
Mayiga highlighted the need to establish proper waste management facilities and maintain cleanliness in cities and other areas to prevent future tragedies.
“KCCA should encourage people to start sorting the garbage right from their homes,” said the Katikkiro.
He also pointed out the harmful impact of certain materials, like plastic bags, and encouraged residents to avoid them.
Mayiga offered words of encouragement to the residents of Kiteezi, urging them not to lose hope.
He provided them with essential supplies such as mattresses, food for children and adults, and other necessary items.
Irene Nakasita, a spokesperson for the Red Cross, noted that the aid provided by various donors has significantly contributed to the recovery efforts in Kiteezi, with some residents even sharing donations with others affected by landslides in different parts of the country.
Over a hundred people remain in the camp, and it has been 13 days since any additional bodies were discovered among the more than 20 individuals still missing.
