The Kampala Metropolitan Police have launched an urgent investigation into a series of violent attacks along the Northern Bypass that have left one person dead and another critically injured.
The incidents, occurring over the past two days, have sparked concern among residents and commuters.
The first attack took place on August 23, 2024, when Mr Sulaiman Wagaba, a resident of Central Zone, Kiwatule, was assaulted by unknown assailants.
Mr Wagaba was taken to China Naguru Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
His condition is reported to be serious, though specific details of his injuries have not been disclosed.
In response to this incident, Kira Road Police increased patrols in the area, seeking to prevent further violence and apprehend the culprits.
Despite these efforts, a second attack occurred the following morning, underscoring the ongoing threat along this busy road.
On August 24, 2024, at approximately 6 a.m., police responded to an emergency call reporting an attack on Ms Winnie Masibo, an employee at Frain Supermarket in Ntinda.
Ms Masibo was assaulted by unidentified attackers while on her way to work. During the attack, her phone and a bag containing important documents were stolen. The assailants left her unconscious at the scene.
Emergency services quickly arrived, and Ms Masibo was taken to a nearby medical facility, where she is currently being treated for her injuries.
Although the full extent of her injuries has not been disclosed, it is confirmed that she lost consciousness during the attack, highlighting the severity of the incident.
Following this second attack, police launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.
During the pursuit, two suspects were identified.
A confrontation ensued between the police and the suspects, resulting in the fatal shooting of one of the men, identified as Jonathan Rwothomio.
Rwothomio, who was reportedly out on bail at the time, was facing charges of store breaking and theft under case reference Kiwatule CRB 081/2024.
Rwothomio’s body has been transported to the City Mortuary at Mulago for further examination.
His accomplice managed to escape, taking with him the stolen items, including Ms Masibo's phone and documents.
Police said an extensive search is underway for the fugitive, who remains at large.
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
He assured the public of the police’s commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and commuters using the Northern Bypass.
"We are intensifying our efforts to bring those responsible to justice and to prevent any further incidents," Owoyesigyire stated.
The police have urged anyone with information about these attacks or the whereabouts of the second suspect to come forward.
Additional updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
