Bodies of toddler, two children recovered from Kiteezi landfill
Baby Benitta's remains, along that of 6-year-old Simon Katerega and Leticia Nassiwa, 9, was Thursday afternoon recovered by search and rescue team from the collapsed garbage.
TRAGIC | For six days, Benitta Nakalema was buried under the putrid heap of garbage inside Kiteezi landfill, her body of one year limp and cold.
Baby Benitta's remains, alongside that of 6-year-old Simon Katerega and Leticia Nassiwa, 9, was Thursday afternoon recovered by search and rescue team from the collapsed garbage.
The recovery brings the number of the victims to 34, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango said.
The fourth victim was identified as Moureen Nakitto, 29.
"All the above bodies were identified by Margaret Nakabiri , a resident of Bukomero Nakiluli in Kiboga District and Fred Lukanga," Onyango said.
Tonnes of garbage collapsed over homesteads around the landfill that authorities have since revealed had seen the best of its usage, choking scores under its putrid.
Police say at least 29 people are still unaccounted for with rescues battling bad weather as the rainy season has kicked it.
"Bad weather was a bit of a challenge towards evening hours," said Mr Onyango, who added that the figures for Thursday were as of 6.30pm.
The landfill collapse or garbage slide was triggered by a downpour although reports have since emerged that city authorities had neglected a report about the looming hazard at the landfill.
