Birigwa relief after court trashes FDC Najjanakumbi charges

Former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) national chairman Wasswa Birigwa received a significant legal victory today as the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate dismissed a case against him.

The case, brought by former party member Jamal Wante, had accused Birigwa of impersonation and forgery of documents.

The magistrate ruled that the complainant had failed to establish a prima facie case and did not provide a necessary letter from the local chief.

At the FDC headquarters on Katonga Road, Birigwa welcomed the court's decision with relief and satisfaction.

He expressed confidence that the ruling affirmed his position as the legitimate party chairperson amidst ongoing internal disputes within the FDC.

Birigwa, flanked by his lawyer and FDC supporters, criticized the Najjanakumbi faction, which had supported the case against him.

“They accused me of impersonation, claiming I was not the FDC chairman,” Birigwa said. “But the court has ruled that out. I am the chairperson of the FDC party.”

He further dismissed the efforts of the Najjanakumbi faction, stating, “All that they did, including the elections and delegate conferences, is now null and void.”

Despite the legal victory, questions remain about whether the dismissal of the petition against Birigwa solidifies his position as the national party chairman.

The ongoing leadership struggle within the FDC reflects deeper issues of factionalism and governance that continue to challenge the party’s unity and effectiveness.
