About Sserunkuma
Born 58 years ago in Wakiso district, Brigadier General Sserunkuma joined the National Resistance Army (NRA) in May 1982 at Kiziba village in Masulita Sub County, Luwero district.
He played a crucial role in the five-year liberation struggle led by President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni.
Throughout his distinguished career, Sserunkuma has commanded various units of the UPDF, steadily rising through the ranks.
In 2003, he led the Uniform Battalion in a series of cordon and search operations across the Karamoja Sub region, recovering 281 rifles in Amudat district from illegally armed warriors.
During the same year, when the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels invaded the Teso Sub region, then-Captain Sserunkuma and his unit were tasked with securing the Soroti-Wera-Katakwi road to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to IDPs in Teso.
In a notable military operation, he commanded the 9th Infantry Battalion during Operation Iron Fist, aiming to flush out LRA rebels in South Sudan’s Bilinyang, Nisitu, and Imatongo hills.
Sserunkuma also participated in peace support operations under AMISOM, now ATMIS, serving in 2012 as the commanding officer of the 9th Infantry Battalion and in 2019 as Battle Group 28 Commander.
He was credited with the recapture of Janale, a former stronghold of Al-Shabaab in Somalia's Lower Shabelle Sub region, which the militants had controlled for six years.
Promoted to the rank of Colonel in 2017, Sserunkuma was appointed as the 405 Brigade Commander, overseeing disarmament operations in North Karamoja.
His efforts ensured the security of communities from seasonal threats posed by armed rustlers both internally and from neighboring Kenya and South Sudan.
He held this command until May 2023, when he was reassigned as acting Deputy Commander of the 2nd Division in Mbarara city, Western Uganda.
In June 2024, President Museveni appointed Brigadier Sserunkuma as the Deputy Commander of the 3rd Division, replacing Brigadier General Felix Busizoori, the current Commander of the 4th Infantry Division.
Major Isaac Oware, the Public Information Officer, expressed gratitude for Brigadier General Sserunkuma's leadership.
"As the 3rd Division fraternity, we treasure Brigadier Sserunkuma's leadership style as a battle-hardened, loyal, and committed commander," Major Oware stated.
