The Shs50 billion project has transformed the city's infrastructure, enhancing urban mobility and aesthetics.
The project covers a total road length of 5.26km, supported by 12.64km of walkways, 6.71km of parking lanes, 159 streetlights, 16.72km of curbstones, three box culverts, and 8,244 metres of pipe culverts.
Key roads completed under the program include Naboa Road, Cathedral Avenue, Central Road, Manafwa and Market Place Road, North Road, Nkonkonjeru Terrace, and Pallisa Road, which connects from Bishop Wasikye to Pallisa Road.
These developments build on the 3.1km of roads completed in the first phase, which cost Shs25 billion.
The major works, carried out by M/S Dott Services Limited, were completed at a total cost of Shs 47.5 billion.
Supervision and consultancy services were provided by M/S UB Consulting Limited, M/S Air Water Earth (AWE) Limited, and KOM Consult Limited.
The project has significantly improved road connectivity and walkability in Mbale City, while the installation of streetlights has extended business hours and enhanced security for motorists and pedestrians alike.
The Minister of State for Urban Development, Kania Mario Obiga, highlighted the importance of maintaining the roads and appealed to local authorities to enforce cleanliness and sanitation along the streets.
He emphasized the need to condition trade licenses on maintaining tidiness, painting premises, and providing waste bins.
President Museveni used the occasion to reiterate his commitment to wealth creation and urged locals to embrace government programs such as Emyoga and the Parish Development Model.
He also outlined his master plan to address traffic congestion and road accidents across the country through the development of alternative transport infrastructure, including railways and pipelines, to ease pressure on the road network.
The USMID-AF project underscores the government’s dedication to fostering urbanization and economic growth in Uganda.
Residents of Mbale City now look forward to long-term benefits, including improved business opportunities, safer mobility, and a more vibrant urban environment.
