The holy month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, known for its capacity to detoxify the soul and strengthen the bond with Allah.

Lasting for 29-30 days, Ramadan is a period for spiritual reflection, self-discipline, universal brotherhood, worship, and self-control. Muslims partake in one meal before dawn, called Sahur, and another after sunset, known as Iftar.

Aside from abstaining from food and drink from dawn to dusk, there are essential practices to follow and behaviors to avoid during Ramadan:

Dos:

• Recite the Quran: Ramadan is an opportune time to connect with the Almighty. As the month when the holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad, it's encouraged to recite the Quran as much as possible.

• Offer prayers: Muslims are required to pray five times a day to seek forgiveness and guidance from Allah.

• Observe fasting: Fasting during Ramadan is highly esteemed in Islamic culture, with increased spiritual rewards during this month. Fasting is a fundamental pillar of Islam and should be observed with sincerity and faith.

• Practice charity: Muslims are encouraged to donate generously to support the poor and needy during Ramadan and throughout the year.

• Practice self-discipline and self-control: Embrace the virtues of compassion, self-control, and discipline during Ramadan, fostering a sense of community spirit.

• Show respect: Cultivate tolerance, compassion, and forgiveness, promoting brotherhood and unity among Muslim communities worldwide.

• Dress modestly: Modesty in attire is encouraged, avoiding clothing that is overly revealing or ill-fitted.

• Extend well wishes: Share greetings with friends and family, enjoy meals together, and exchange gifts during Iftar, fostering familial and communal bonds.

• Encourage unity: Promote unity among friends, family, and the community by praying and dining together, strengthening social bonds.

Don'ts:

• Don’t consume food or water during fasting hours: Abstain from eating and drinking between dawn and dusk, as fasting is the central tenet of Ramadan.

• Don’t hold grudges: Practice forgiveness and avoid harbouring resentment towards others. Seek forgiveness from both people and Allah during this sacred period.

• Don’t chew gum or smoke: Refrain from chewing gum or smoking during Ramadan.

• Be cautious with language: Avoid swearing or using offensive language, as blasphemy is particularly frowned upon during Ramadan.

• Avoid public displays of loud music or dancing: Respect the solemnity of the month by refraining from engaging in activities that may disturb others.
