High court session launched in Kanungu circuit
The high court of Uganda has launched a circuit session in Kanungu district, aiming at clearing a backlog of criminal cases
Justice Zeija Flavian launched the first ever session at the Kanungu chief magistrates court, emphasizing the judiciary’s commitment to bringing justice closer to the people.
The session is being presided over by His Lordship Justice Tom Chemtai the resident judge
According to the Kigezi police spokesperson criminal cases set for hearing include aggravated robbery, aggravated defilement, aggravated human trafficking Murder, rape and so many others.
“A total of 49 prisoners are to appear before court. These comprising 48 males and one female, will all cases originating from Kanungu district.” Maate explains.
Maate also says that the community has welcomed the judiciary efforts to bring justice closer to the people and pledged to actively participate by testifying to ensure that offenders are duly punished.
In his address, Justice Zeija recommended that such sessions be held a least twice a year to restore public trust in the justice system. He further says that these sessions would help the community by reducing expenses and reducing the distance to court to seek justice, as many cases originated from hard-to-reach areas.
