UMSC maps new Muslim districts
The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) Electoral Commission has embarked on a mapping and assessment exercise to evaluate the proposed creation of new Muslim districts.
The exercise, led by the National Chairperson of the UMSC Electoral Commission, Were Abubaker Wandagho, is in accordance with the UMSC Constitution as outlined in Article 2(4).

Commencing on July 25, 2024, the team first attended a special session of the Iganga Muslim District Council, which was convened to consider the proposal to elevate Namutumba to the status of a new Muslim district. The council members unanimously passed the resolution. Later that day, the team traveled to Namutumba for further mapping and assessment.
A similar process was conducted at Kamuli Muslim District, where the council approved the creation of Buyende Muslim District. The team also visited Buyende for an on-site assessment.
Wandagho informed the media that the commission was pleased with the progress so far, noting that the proposed new Muslim districts in the Busoga Muslim region met the requirements stipulated in the UMSC Constitution.
These include the establishment of new mosques, madrasas, secular and theological schools, accommodations for sheikhs and imams, income-generating projects such as lock-up shops and abattoirs, available land for future projects, and support from volunteers and well-wishers.
According to the roadmap, the team will continue the exercise next week in Karamoja and expects to conclude in Toro Muslim District.
The assessment will determine whether Amudat and Kyegegwa will be included among the newly created Muslim districts.
