Police in Njeru Municipality have launched investigations into a fire that broke out on Monday morning, June 2, 2025, at Cardinal Nsubuga Secondary School in Nyenga Division, Buikwe District.
The blaze, which erupted at around 10:30 AM, destroyed a significant amount of school property and students’ belongings housed in the S1 and S2 boys’ dormitory.
According to preliminary reports, the fire was first spotted by the school’s boys’ warden, Juma Musasizi, who noticed thick smoke billowing from the dormitory block.
Upon rushing to the scene, he found the dormitory engulfed in flames. Musasizi immediately raised an alarm, prompting a response from the school administration and local authorities.
The incident was swiftly reported to the police.
Ssezibwa Regional Police spokesperson, Hellen Butoto, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are currently underway to establish the exact cause of the fire.
She noted that while the extent of the damage is still being assessed, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
“We are actively investigating the circumstances under which the fire started. Various exhibits were recovered from the scene, including ash remains, two charcoal iron boxes, and other burnt items,” said Butoto.
The incident has raised renewed concerns over the frequent occurrence of fires in schools during the academic term.
Despite these incidents, reports from the Police Fire and Rescue Department regarding the causes of school fires are seldom released to the public.
Authorities are continuing to gather evidence, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend any individuals who may be linked to the fire.
Parents and community members have called on the Ministry of Education and school administrators to enhance safety measures, including the installation of fire detection and suppression systems, regular fire drills, and stricter supervision in boarding sections.
