The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has condemned the spread of false claims regarding the imprisonment of advocate Eron Kiiza, dismissing reports that suggest Kiiza was asked to apologize to the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, in exchange for his release.
In a statement released today, ULS President Isaac Ssemakadde described the allegations as "false" and "misleading."
Ssemakadde also criticised individuals propagating these rumors, which he said are causing harm to Kiiza, his family, the Uganda Prisons Service, and the broader community.
"The ULS has established three fact-finding teams to investigate the circumstances surrounding Kiiza's imprisonment. These teams will assess the situation, explore potential remedies, and ensure the protection of the rights of all advocates, including Kiiza, within the military court system," the statement said.
Kiiza, a prominent lawyer, is currently serving a nine-month prison sentence.
His detention and alleged mistreatment have sparked public outrage and reignited debates on human rights abuses and the fairness of military courts trying civilians.
Speculation online suggested that Ssemakadde had visited Kiiza in prison and recommended that he apologize to Gen. Muhoozi for his release.
However, Ssemakadde categorically denied these claims and urged the public to refrain from spreading baseless rumours.
"We call on everyone to remain calm, await our comprehensive statement, and prioritise truth over speculation. The ULS remains committed to supporting Kiiza, his family, and advocating for the protection of human rights and the rule of law in Uganda," Ssemakadde added.
The ULS also expressed gratitude to Kenyan lawyer Martha Karua, for her recent discussions with the society and her support for the ongoing legal process.
The society emphasised its determination not to engage with those attempting to politicise or sensationalise the matter and affirmed its commitment to pursuing justice through lawful means.
As the investigation proceeds, ULS urges a responsible approach and stresses the importance of relying on credible sources to ensure fairness and accuracy in the ongoing discussions.
