Uganda Prisons Services has cleared the air about their new uniform that was officially unveiled in Busia during the 62nd independence celebrations.
The new camouflage uniform has left tongues wagging, especially on social media.
However, according to Prisons spokesperson, Frank Baine, the new uniform is not meant to replace the old one but rather to be used by one of their units mandated to offer guard duties.
“This uniform is meant for a unit called safety and security and not for every body. This unit is specifically trained to guard key installations, VVIPs and escort hard core criminals,” Baine said.
He said the new camouflage uniform was introduced because of the nature of the job of those in the safety and security unit which sometimes involves maneuvers which cant be done while donning the original maroon uniform.
“This was designed to help the unit execute its duties easily.”
He said the Commissioner General of Prisons is allowed from time to time to have a specific uniform that works for a specific unit.
“There shouldn’t be worry we have lost the old uniform but rather introduced one for one of our units.”
Baine insisted the new uniform is not for every prison warder but rather for only those in the security and safety unit, adding that the other normal uniforms are still in place.
